Parging Repair

Parging Repair

Parging is a very interesting part of masonry restoration and brick repair. It can be used for aesthetic purposes, to give a wall or section of a wall a uniform look. It can also be used as a band-aid to try and stop deterioration and water entry into brick, block, stone or any masonry structure.

Parging is applied with a trowel and often it is sponged or rubbed down to give as smooth a texture as possible. We can add tints to parging mortar, if needed, to help it blend with the material we are repairing.

Often times, parging is not applied to a well prepared surface (the surface has a non bondable material like dust, caulking or paint) and the parging can flake or fall off well ahead of it’s time. If the parging mix does not contain the correct formula of cement/sand or enough of a bonding agent (glue) it will not last very long.

What To Look For

If you walk around the exterior of your home, and you have an existing portion of your wall that has been parged, you can inspect it to see if it needs work. What you look for is cracking, flaking, extensive discolouration. If you tap your parging with something like a key or nail, you can often hear hollow areas, which can indicate a bad mortar bond or an area of deterioration behind the parging.
